The Squatty Potty

Let the Squatty Potty take the strain

The new colonic clinic will be up and running at the end of February, so I thought it was time to locate another squatting stool for the new toilet.  I’ve had a squatting stool in my Arnold Clinic toilet for many years now, and I always explain to clients the importance of putting their feet up on the stool when they are evacuating their bowels.  Why, I hear you ask:

Modern civilization sometimes goes against the body’s natural design and function.  We were not meant to sit down when evacutating our bowels.  For millenia our ancestors squatted on the floor.  It’s a well known fact that when we squat to poo, we discharge more poo than when we sit on a loo.  Research has proved this.

The muscles around our rectum control whether we are able to evacuate our bowels, or not.  Many people, when sitting on the toilet, have to strain to get the poo to come out.  If you want piles and prolapses then carry on.  But if you don’t want to end up with those painful inflamed, engorged throbbing piles or a prolapsed bowel, bladder (or ladies uterus) then please ensure your feet are at least 7″ off the ground when you are pooping.  By increasing the angle of the knees to around 35 degrees, the puborectus muscle is able to relax, decreasing the angle of the rectum, so it’s in a downward position, instead of a kinked position = less strain, less constipation, less prolapses, less piles, less bowel disease.

I’ve found this great stool.  It’s called a ‘Squatty Potty’, and is available in the UK from: stressnomore.co.uk http://www.stressnomore.co.uk/squattypotty-ecco-92308.html?gclid=CL2K0e6phrUCFUbKtAod3BcArg

It’s priced at  a very reasonable £27 including postage and packaging.  The stools come in a 5″, 7″ or 9″ depth.  For our modern UK toilets, a 7″ one is adequate, but then you might want to increase the angle even more, at a later date, and go for the 9″ potty. Not if you’ve got arthritic hips or knees though!
